Early box office tracking suggests Star Wars: The Last Jedi will have second biggest opening weekend in history

We’re just under a couple of months away from the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and as excitement continues to grow for the middle chapter of Disney and Lucasfilm’s Sequel Trilogy, early box office tracking is pointing to an out of this world opening for the film.

According to The Wrap, The Last Jedi is tracking a domestic opening weekend of $215 million, which would put it ahead of the $208.8 million debut of 2016’s Jurassic World for the second biggest bow of all time. Top spot is currently held by its predecessor Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which pulled in $247.9 million across its opening weekend on its way to becoming the biggest North American release of all time with $936.6 million.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the States and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, and Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).

George Lucas set in motion this huge ‘epic’ story, when he allowed Sir Alec Guinness to say these iconic words- “For a ‘THOUSAND GENERATIONS’, the Jedi Knights have been the guardians of peace ‘throughout’ the Old Republic.” Now, consider what episodes 1-9 covers. About one or two generations? I have always seen episodes 1-6 as being “The Rise, Fall And Redemption Of Anakin Skywalker”, and episode seven is the beginning of the next generation. Of course, I think many ‘comics/novels’ fans were hoping to see Anakin, Jaina and Jacen Solo as the children of Han and Leia., and I can’t help but think that some version of them will come out in the next two films (if not possibly episode nine). Then again, we ‘could’ see more films/episodes in the future. Films that could cover stories of the past (like ‘Knights Of The Old Republic’) to future events that involve Cade Skywalker (who exists 125 years ‘after’ the battle of Endor). If there’s money to be made, then Disney ‘will’ make as many episodes and ‘stand alone’ films that they can ‘afford’ to make….
